My Project

Students don't read books like they used to. However, in order to increase student literacy, students must read engaging, meaningful, and robust texts that capture and maintain their attention. "Maus: A Survivor's Tale" by Art Spiegelman checks all these boxes. In my experience, "Maus" has consistently made an impression on my students and helped jumpstart their literacy growth.

Many of my students have told me that "Maus" has been their favorite book they've read in my English literature class.

"Maus" is a graphic novel about the Holocaust that is easy to read, has complex and relatable characters, and is offered in many languages. As a teacher of multi-language learners, having "Maus" in both English and Spanish would benefit the diverse student populations in my classroom. I believe an eloquent and engaging text like "Maus" can be the stepping stone for students to make their own decision to read more books.
