Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an Elementary School Counselor in an Urban district. This is a new position at the school. Many of the students this year are returning to in person school after learning from home since March of 2020. These students will need various supports for their Academic, Social and Emotional needs. As the School Counselor one of my roles will be supporting all students' Social and Emotional Learning to help them be successful academically.

The school has a diverse learning community that has various needs including English as a Second Language as well as various social, emotional and academic needs impacting their instruction.

There are approximately 500 students in grades Kindergarten through Grade 5. More than half of the students receive Free or Reduced lunch. The faculty and staff are committed to the goals of empowering all students to achieve their personal best and developing the whole student-intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.

My Project

One goal for the 21/22 school year will be to focus on students' Social and Emotional Learning which leads to academic success. Many students have been learning from home since March 2020 which has had an adverse affect on their Social/Emotional development. The other goal is to support those students who were learning from home virtually. These students will find it a challenge to be back to in person learning, I want to teach them the skills they will need to be successful as they return back to the classroom.

Students need a comfortable, cozy and safe place to go to when they need a break from the classroom, want to speak about their feelings or talk about challenges they are facing in school or at home.

Students have been affected by the Pandemic in different ways some getting sick, learning digitally from home, losing a loved one or their family is facing economic difficulties. This school year they will need lots of support and one way to do this is to create a space where they feel welcomed and loved.
