"I never wrote a 5 before!" These are the words one of my students exclaimed as we were working on numbers. Watching them get so excited and proud of themselves as they master new tasks is the reason I became a teacher and love my job.
I am a second-year teacher in a kindergarten classroom in the Philadelphia school district, where 80% of my students did not go to preschool.
This is many of the children's first experience in a structured learning environment. I have a class size of 29, 11 boys and 18 girls.
One hundred percent of our students are offered free breakfast and lunch. Despite any hardships in their home lives, my students walk into our classroom every day full of life, excited to learn, and ready for the activities planned each day.
"Ms. Logan can I go read a book?" Those words are music to my ears. I love when my students are excited about reading. Some of my students are not encouraged to read at home or do not understand that reading is a way to relax and unwind. Since this is only my second year of teaching I am trying to make my classroom as warm and comfortable for my students so they love being at school.
I wish my students had a comfortable place in my classroom to read, with a comfy couch!
The first part to encourage reading in the classroom is to make students feel comfortable while doing it. In my classroom we have hard floors, and though I try to have many rugs in my room to make it comfortable I know a couch would make a huge difference. If students were able to cuddle up with a friend on the couch and read they would become more excited about reading. I am looking forward to a more comfortable classroom and to encourage a love of reading for my students.
