Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am the proud teacher of 28 school-loving kindergarten students. Each morning they arrive eager to start their day and are abuzz with the new things that we are going to learn. There is a love of learning from the moment they arrive!

My school is located in a multicultural area of Philadelphia.

A percentage of students are learning to speak English for the first time. It is a low-income area of the city and students often come to school with little to no resources provided by the school district. However, my students never see that as a barrier to their learning and are always motivated to do their best.

My Project

Kindergarten classrooms need comfortable spaces for children to sit and listen to stories, interact with their peers, and practice skills they are acquiring.

Hearing a great story, while seated comfortably on the rug, helps students to develop a love of reading.

An essential part of kindergarten is being read quality literature. Having a classroom rug makes that a much more enjoyable experience.

Another important part of kindergarten is conversing with peers and learning how to interact with one another. A classroom carpet provides the perfect space for those interactions.

A lot of new skills are acquired in kindergarten. This includes counting, adding, learning letters and their sounds, beginning to read and so much more! A classroom carpet is an important part of making that happen!
