This will be my first year teaching 1st grade dual language (English/Spanish). I was so lucky at the end of last year to spend time with my incoming class of 1st graders. They are a diverse group of native Spanish and English speakers eager to become bilingual and practice their skills in both languages. I'll never forget hearing one native English speaker say to another, "Let's practice reading in Spanish now!" while the class was engaged in independent work stations.
Do you like to curl up in bed with a good book? Or, perhaps you enjoy reading on your sofa. I want to provide my students with the most comfortable area in our classroom to read. For this reason, I'm asking for a beanbag chair and a lamp to make sure that there is a cozy place to delve into stories as well as softer lighting to make the environment homier. These two items will not only make the library the most attractive spot in our classroom, but they will also help foster the love of reading. This is one of my biggest goals for my students; to fall in love with books and reading!
Furthermore, the electric pencil sharpener and an extra pack of pencils will serve for all of our writing assignments.
As the year goes on, I find that pencils are the classroom material we're constantly needing more of. This extra pack will help to serve as back up when supplies run low.
