My Students

My class is a special and safe place where we engage in activities that allow learning to happen in various ways that are as unique as my students.

My students' disabilities range from Autism, Down Syndrome, other specific learning disabilities, and emotional issues.

Some students also having the challenges of being second language learners. All my students come from high poverty neighborhood where crime and violence is considered a natural part of life.

Each day my students arrive hungry and tired after being on a bus for over an hour. As they get off the bus in the morning they know that they are a part of a class that is 'different' than their same age peers. My students are fighting an uphill battle and they need your help.

My Project

Most of my students are reading at least 4 years below grade level. It has been a struggle to get them excited about reading. They want to read the same books they see their friends reading. But when they try they become very frustrated. Additionally, they were embarrassed to be seen with the books that were at their reading level. Then a retiring teacher gave me her class beanbag and I brought in an exercise ball that was collecting dust in my closet. Then the magic began.

The only rule I have for using the beanbag or exercise ball is that they must be reading.

Reading to themselves, reading to a friend, or even reading to a stuffed animal counts. Since bringing in these 2 seats I have trouble keeping books in their hands because they are reading their books, taking online comprehension test, and passing those tests!

My students are growing in their reading skills, at a rate I was not prepared for. I love saying that my biggest challenge is keeping book in their hands because they keep telling me they need a new one. I will gladly live with that challenge if you will help me provide them with more of these seats so that more can get they reading time they want.
