This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember sitting in uncomfortable chairs in your middle school classroom and being forced to read for hours on end? Was that pleasurable for you? Well, my scholars don't enjoy it at all! I want them to have comfortable places to sit and enjoy their books.
Most of my scholars are reluctant readers who are two to three grade levels below where they should be performing in reading.
They are active, funny, and really want to improve in reading. However, it is a struggle to get them to want to read in class.
My Project
Research shows that students need to spend time every day reading independently. Right now, only about 10% of my scholars do this on a consistent basis. These comfortable chairs will encourage scholars to want to read in class every day. Scholars who are willing to read will be chosen to sit in the chairs around the room.
Reading achievement is tied to success in life.
If my scholars do not improve in reading, they are less likely to get into college and get good jobs later in life. We need these chairs to motivate scholars to want to read every day.
