A Comfortable Chair, A Good Book, And A Quiet Moment!
Help me give my students A better environment in the secondary library that will spark interest and motivate students to improve their reading skills.....
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
The Leland High School/Media Center complements and enhances the educational program in the classroom, provides informational and recreational reading, and provides equipment and software for classroom use. Instruction is offered in research skills to meet the needs of students who must learn how to cope with the current information explosion. As a result of plummeting motivation, secondary students in our schools are reading shockingly little. There is a direct correlation between positive reading attitudes and joyous reading experiences, which is what I hope to do here at Leland High School.
I hope to launch an accelerated reading program in the Fall, with each teacher setting reading goals for their students.
I want to improve the library environment with comfortable chairs and quiet reading areas for the teens to gather and become motivated to review the book selections. I also want to provide better ways to display the books so that they take on the qualities of a unique bookstore or cafe. The focus must shift from struggling, reluctant readers to inspired, motivated students who find reading for pleasure and academic purposes.
Nowadays, technology has replaced the attraction of a good book; however, developing fluency, vocabulary, and background knowledge will help prepare secondary students for college entrance exams and subjects. I appreciate your help in making our Library a place where students can feel comfortable, inspired, and willing to explore the reading of a good book.
