This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a low income bilingual school district. All of my students get free breakfast and lunch daily. They come to kindergarten eagaer to learn, and I love each and every one of them. Teaching kindergarten each year brings an exciting new group of students with mixed interests and abilities. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of their classmates are learning to imitate sounds or hold a pencil. Most of my students go home each night to families that do not speak English and my five year olds need to translate to their families about their day, homework, etc

My Project

My kindergarteners come to school eagaer to learn, and sit on a stained, dirty, urine smelling carpet many times throughout the day without complaining. I have asked the principal for a new carpet, but the school doesn’t have the funds for carpets. I have a sand table with less than a half inch of sand in it (I haven’t received new sand in 7 years) most children have never seen or played in sand before and love the sand table with hardly any sand in it. I hide various letters of the alphabet in the sand and the children dig for letters and read them to each other!
