Do you remember surfing in your classroom? Yeah...I don't either. However, the sad little rug that I, as a first year teacher, bought for my classroom gave quite a few wild rides. Although my students usually enjoyed "accidentally" slipping on my crazy rug, I feel that it would be safer to upgrade.
I teach 3rd grade at a public charter school in Arizona.
My classroom is full of energetic and enthusiastic young learners. I have found that the best way to channel the energy in my classroom is by establishing a student centered community. I love using small groups and learning centers to enrich my instruction. This means we are often all spread out around the classroom. Even though the kids don't usually mind laying on the floor, I would much rather have a rug under them to cushion their collaboration.
My Project
Everyone can imagine what 50 minutes of lunch and recess time does to 8 year olds; they go crazy. Settling down after recess and transitioning back into learning mode is a difficult task. Surprisingly, those first 20 minutes back in our classroom after lunch has actually become my favorite time of the day. This is the time for my students to sit together, relax, and enjoy a story read aloud to them. The painted cement floor in our classroom isn't especially cozy, and unfortunately, the $20 indoor/outdoor rug that I bought wasn't much of an improvement. The addition of a nice and comfortable rug for our classroom would be welcomed by every little 3rd grader who found themselves on it.
I want to create a safer and more cozy classroom with the addition of a rug.
Even though we have enjoyed the surfing lessons that come with my current rug, I'm worried someone will get hurt. Thank you so much for considering this gift to our classroom.
