My Students
My students are a true reflection of our tiny, rural, and very close-knit community. They come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds, though the majority of our school's students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My students are eager to learn about the world outside of our small coastal town, excited about the possibilities that college represents, and very hardworking.
They are deep thinkers with creative minds. It is so rewarding to watch them develop their critical thinking skills via reading and writing about literature. We have incredible classroom discussions about what we're reading and the connections my students make between the texts and the world we live in continues to astound me.
My Project
I am seeking to complete our class novel set of Never Let Me Go, a dystopian tale written by Kazuo Ishiguro. Shortlisted for the 2005 Booker Prize, this text is replete with moving themes of identity, humanity, and belonging.
I've taught this novel the past two years and my students absolutely love reading and discussing it.
They connect so much with the characters in the book, and the topics the text brings up serve as a catalyst for many deep and thoughtful classroom seminars. Reading this novel that is rich in symbolism and poignant characterization helps to prepare my students for the rigorous AP Literature & Composition exam.
