My students need 30 copies of both "The Twits" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

We are struggling against all odds. I teach in an inner-city school where 90% of the students receive free lunch. Our staff and principal really work hard to make the school a safe learning environment, but that is also a struggle sometimes when neighborhood issues creep into the school. So many of the students are capable but need so much encouragement and motivation to succeed.

My Grade 5 class is wholly populated with students reading below grade level. I accepted the challenge to teach the class because I thought I could make a difference with my 30 years of teaching. It's not easy to motivate them since Reading is such a struggle for them.

I've tried varying the types of books to see if I can "grab" some interest and have been successful to a point. However, there are too many still in need of being "hooked" by reading. Roald Dahl always has captured my classes when I've read them the books. I'd like the class to discover what a joy he is to read. They don't think of reading as being entertaining yet. I hope to capture their interest with class sets of The Twits and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
