Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located within the Los Angeles area basin and mainly serves low-income families. It is designated as a Title I school, with eighty-six percent of the students receiving free lunches.
My students are highly energetic and are excited about learning.
Like most classrooms, my students have a wide range of learning modalities and must constantly be engaged in different activities that are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. They are also recognized as the gifted learners for their grade level since they are clustered into one classroom.
Within the past few years, students at my school have steadily improved academically across all areas. This has led to a steady rise in test scores across all grade levels. The students are taking responsibility for their learning and living up to the school motto, "M Street School will create a community of global citizens in a caring, rich, learning environment that empowers all members to be tolerant, cooperative, and creative individuals reaching their fullest potential with a vision and the skills to take responsibility for our planet's future."
My Project
Unfortunately, many of my students do not have access to adequate technology in their homes. School is the only place where they have access to devices such as computers. The Chromebook will be added to our growing classroom technological center. With the addition of the Chromebook from this project, there will be almost enough technology for students to work independently in order to create presentations for science (especially STEM), publish in Writers' Workshop, and to do research for social studies projects. Furthermore, this Chromebook will allow students to access coding programs that are appropriate for their skill level. They will also be able to access our school's online math intervention/enrichment program, Dreambox. Finally, students will also have greater access to websites that allow them to access grade-appropriate activities related to the Common Core standards.
"The number-one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do.
It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential."
-Steve Ballmer.
By providing my students with this Chromebook, they will have the potential of empowerment in regards to their learning. Furthermore, the classroom as a whole will be a step closer to being technologically adequate for the 21st century.
