My Students

"I could never teach an inclusion class" is something I used to think as a first-year teacher. Now, it is really difficult to even imagine not teaching inclusion classes. My students are the ones who most people give up on. Many of them have learning disabilities or behavioral problems. In a meeting, when administration asks about certain students who are known as trouble makers or low-level students, administration often will turn to me because they assume they are my students; however, my students aren't these bad kids who are terrible to teach.

The students in my classroom have learning disabilities and behavioral problems; however, these students are clever, insightful, and very much capable when given the chance to succeed.

Many of my students have fallen through the cracks because previous teachers felt it easier to pass them instead of taking the time to meet their needs. I have taught everything from inclusion to IB/Pre-AP 9th graders, and really there isn't that much of a difference in the classroom. The college bound students learn best from traditional methods of teaching. When given the tools they need to succeed, my students are able to produce results

My Project

Today we live in a world where are expected to do several tasks simultaneously. While this is great in theory, research has proven that it is nearly impossible to be able to do multiple tasks at the same time. In school, learning should be the number one priority. However there is one big problem that stands in the way: cell phones. There is an easy solution to this problem--a charging station! Most students are willing to put their phones up when they are able to charge them. I have allowed students to do this, but my classroom doesn't have enough outlets. Additionally my students need a secure area to store their phones.

A charging station will allow my students to be free from the distractions of their phone and focus on learning.

By giving students a safe place to charge their phones, this will allow for optimal learning. In addition to the charging station, there are few items needed to create a super charged classroom. We desperately need a new electric pencil sharpener and a printer cable so that students can actually use the printer we have in our classroom. We desperately need a new set of speakers. In this class we use a lot of media that involves sound. Our current speakers are mostly inaudible, making it very hard to use the media that engages the students. Last, but not least, we need to get some new kick bands. These are designed to allow kids to constantly be moving their feet. These are great for students with ADD and ADHD. My class sizes are growing so I need additional kick bands to adjust for these class sizes. The goal is have students focus on learning and I know these supplies can make it happen!
