Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My schools is a Title I school in a low income, high poverty area. It is the biggest elementary school in the state with around 1500 students ranging from preschool to eighth grade. The majority of the students who attend this school are English language learners. Often times they come to their first day of school not knowing any English at all.
As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I work with students across all grade levels with varying disabilities.
Each student is unique in their needs, but they have the same goal: to learn. No matter the background, or the disability, I see the desire to learn new things in each one of my students.
My Project
As a speech-language pathologist, we are working with students of various disabilities and across various educational settings. Often times we have students who do well in a small group setting but are easily distracted by the larger classroom setting. Wiggle seats and kick strips can provide the sensory input needed to help them focus just a little bit easier in different environments. Often times the general education classroom doesn't have these tools accessible to them.
Many of my students have a case of the wiggles!
By providing them with alternate tools, they now have an outlet within their general education classrooms. They have the ability to focus their extra energy on fidgets and wiggle seats which will, in turn, allow them to begin to focus more on the instruction and curriculum!
