This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

For children with autism, sensory processing typically means they’re overly sensitive to something other people are not. For example, they don’t like the feeling of a tag on their clothes, they may be sensitive to loud sounds, or a smell bothers them more than it should. This can result in sensory overload where they will show a certain behavior when they are experiencing a sensory issue, like refusing to wear certain clothes, covering their ears when they hear a loud noise, or flapping their hands or rocking back and forth when they are experiencing a sensory issue. This can sometimes create a situation where they can cause harm to themselves or others.

By donating to our project, you will help us create a sensory room that will allow us to manage challenging behaviors by providing a supportive and calming environment that is tailored to children living with autism spectrum disorder.

The sensory room will be available for individual students under the supervision of an adult. It offers a nurturing, student-centered sensory supportive environment. It will be used to facilitate self ­organization, self-regulation, relaxation, and sensory awareness in order to integrate a student back into the classroom or least restrictive environment.

We are very lucky to have a room specifically to use for our sensory room. It is a blank canvas. Your donations will be used for the purchase of the materials to create an oasis in the eye of the storm. We are requesting materials like beanbags chairs, sensory tiles, a back vibration massager, soft floor tiles, and other sensory materials. These students are unable to speak for themselves and are often overlooked. Please donate to this project and show these students that they matter and are loved.
