A Calming Corner: A Place to Help Reflect and Refocus.

My Students

My students are inspiring artists and eager learners that attend a school that engages learning through the arts. The school is a Title 1 school that serves 600 students enrolled in K-4.

The students in my school come from diverse backgrounds and have faced a wide variety of challenges.

Some of the challenges include mental health issues, disabilities, homelessness, poverty, and traumatic backgrounds. Because of these challenges, some the students have trouble regulating their emotions. As the school counselor I want to find a response strategy to help these students regulate their emotions in an effective way that allows them to refocus on their academic learning.

My Project

My students are ages 5 to 10, grades kindergarten to fourth grade. During this age range children are learning social and emotional language and skills to self-regulate. Learning these new skills in a new, exciting environment can sometimes be too much. Creating a calming corner for each of the classrooms in my building can help these students to de-escalate when upset. Calming corners are a quiet area in a class where the student can reflect, refocus, and center themselves so that they can rejoin the rest of the class. The corner is equipped with soothing materials like liquid bubblers. Fidgets such as squish balls, mesh marbles, and spike rings can help with sensory needs. Mindfulness cards printed on card stock and laminated can help the student recenter and distract their brain. Individual places to sit either on the floor with a clipboard or with a separate desk will allow for reflection can allow the child to stay in the room with the rest of the students; giving them a sense of belonging and a faster recovery. It also helps to reduce work avoidance. A calming corner is a small, but much needed comfort, for a child that is overstimulated, frustrated, triggered, or dysregulated in some way.
