Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In my social skills classroom, learning works best when it is hands-on, engaging, and responsive to sensory needs. My students with autism often need movement, tactile input, and interactive experiences to stay regulated and ready to learn. By incorporating STEM-based materials that go beyond teaching science and engineering concepts, students will feel calmer, more focused, and more confident in their learning environment. Tools that involve spinning, switching, and cause and effect interactions, such as light-up busy boards, magnetic gears, and Spin Again style toys, will be available in our Calm Corner to support emotional regulation. These materials give students a safe and purposeful way to reset, making it easier for them to return to learning activities.

At the same time, our STEM center will provide opportunities for exploration, creativity, and problem-solving through building and design.

Materials like Jelly Blox and Tobbles encourage stacking, balancing, and experimenting, helping students develop spatial awareness, persistence, and early engineering skills. As students engage with these activities, they will also practice communication, turn-taking, and collaboration with peers. By placing these resources in both our Calm Corner and STEM area, students will learn to recognize their needs, regulate their emotions, and actively participate in meaningful learning experiences. These activities will create an environment where sensory support and STEM discovery work hand in hand to help every student thrive.
