A Calm Space for Newcomers to Learn

My Project

Our students are dedicated to learning English in their new home but it can be an overwhelming experience as they acclimate to a new culture, new language and new school environment. Often they are struggling with culture shock, homesickness and depression as they struggle to communicate with even the basics. Having a "safe spot" where they don't feel out of place to decompress is one way a Multilingual language department can support them with that frustration.

Our classrooms are designed to feel more friendly than the average with covers for florescent lights, signage in multiple languages and decor that reflects the amazing cultures represented in our school.

However, nontraditional seating and softer lighting would allow for a more relaxing environment. Currently, this room is used for all our newcomer classes and beginning learners as well as those who also struggle with a learning disability on top of their multilingual status. We also host multilingual study halls and homework help before and after school to our entire multilingual community. We want them to consider it Their Space, and hope to call it the Green Room as a head nod to, not just its nature theme, but also what a Green room historically represents; a place to prepare or decompress when not on stage and a place to connect and support others.

We find that once students discover a location where they feel welcome and comfortable, learning moves more quickly. Speaking is our toughest hurdle, but when you are sitting next to someone coloring, playing games or trying a new food before school, it is easier to practice those new phrases in such an environment.
