We are using them to build vocabulary and practice their speaking skills. This first semester was spent with basic language. We learned the land forms that are a part of each biome as well as the plants and animals that could inhabit them. We created those on the maps you donated.\r\n\r\nThen each student created their own island with a legend describing what they had on their island as well as the biomes it would contain. It had to have at least one city so that in the second semester we will be using their projects as the locations for the roleplaying adventures.\r\n\r\nStudents are excited to see the kinds of races and creatures they will be able to interact with in our first part of the game in January. Each student will get their own dice and character and will have choices to make as a part of an adventure team. This allowed us to go outside and monitor water quality near our school. We happen to have a stream and a pond right on our school campus. This especially helped us during one of our ecology unit labs in which we look at how dissolved oxygen effects organisms that live in our ponds and streams. We were also excited because it gave us a chance to practice utilizing a new technology which will help us in our future endeavors when we take classes like this in college. It also teaches us about citizen science and how citizens can help to monitor water quality in the environment just like a real scientist can.\r\n Our next exciting plan is to test dissolved oxygen and other parameters at nearby ponds, lakes and streams in the neighborhood of our school to do a comparison of water quality in the different areas. We even plan to create a database and keep this data over time with future classes contributing to this database. \r\n Once again, we'd like to thank you for your generosity and know it is so appreciated.
