This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with the warmest, kindest, silliest group of mixed general education and special education students. They work so hard, both in academics and to help each other succeed.

They have never had a normal year of school.

They missed three months of kindergarten when the pandemic began, and last year they went back and forth between in person and at home learning, often with very little warning. Some of them stayed home all year and saw their teachers only through a computer screen.

Now in 2nd grade they are dealing with another surge in COVID and at any given time about half the class is stuck at home in quarantine. It has been a chaotic, confusing, and anxious couple of years for these bright, kind, and resilient 7 year olds.

My Project

Our kids are back in school, but they have not been left unmarked. Even those who have largely escaped COVID in other ways have had to deal with school closures and remote learning and they are constantly fielding changes in how we handle supplies, seating, and group work. They are champs, but they are also stressed.

My students need a calm space to recharge, regroup, and refocus.

The tent I’ve chosen will give them a dedicated space where they can work through their feelings. They’ll use the noise cancelling headphones to calm their bodies when they feel overwhelmed, the smelly putty, sensory discs and clip connect building toy to focus their attention, and the weighted lap pads will help improve concentration and release excess energy. This will help alleviate stress and anxiety, which in turn will allow them to do better on their school work.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
