My Project
My students are lively, expressive, eager to learn, and they love creating art! They also sometimes have big feelings that they are learning to manage and regulate.
Having a small space in the room with a soft mat on the floor, soft puppets for comfort and to help express feelings, and laminated cards with photos of people showing different feelings and showing steps for deep breathing and problem-solving will help them calm themselves in order to be able to rejoin our art activities.
When a child is feeling frustrated or angry, they can go to the Calm Corner for a break and use the tools provided there to help themselves feel more relaxed, centered, and ready to move on. The Pandemic has presented big challenges to many of our students and their families - from illness to loss of loved ones to job, housing, and food insecurity. Add to that remote learning and the lack of peers to learn social skills with, and it has left many children really struggling with learning to handle their big feelings and getting along with peers. Now, more than ever, we need to support our students in every way we can to help them learn these skills.
