My Students

Many of my students walk into class and say things like, "I can't do math," or, "This is so hard. I give up." My goal at the beginning of every trimester is for each student to have a positive math experience and for some to pass math for the first time since middle school.

Most of my students are freshmen and sophomores who are still adjusting to the rigor of high school level courses.

They have a lot of energy but get overwhelmed by how much application and technology our new algebra courses require. Right now our school is struggling with unusually high numbers of students failing these algebra courses and having to retake the class (meaning that they lose out on elective courses and the opportunity to get to higher maths before graduation).

My Project

Students will use these graphing calculators in class and at home to gain a better understanding of algebra. Having the ability to quickly graph a situation and see a visual representation helps students enjoy and internalize the material. This calculator technology is also extremely useful and applicable to their future math courses and standardized testing.

Without donations I have had to buy graphing calculators at pawn shops in order for all my students to have the same opportunities.

It is hard when some students in the room can easily run out to the store and buy a top of the line graphing calculator and others know it's not even an option to ask someone at home to make that sort of expensive purchase. Having calculators is the first step to leveling the playing field and offering success for every student!
