My students need terrariums to raise and release caterpillars, and supplies to make seed balls. When planted, the seed balls will create habitat for the adult butterflies and their next generation.

My Students
AES is located in the central Richmond district in San Francisco, CA, and is one of the largest elementary schools in SFUSD.
My students love their school, love learning, and love their school garden.
They are ethnically, culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse. About 40% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many are 1st and 2nd generation immigrants from East Asia and Eastern Europe. I have observed how the school garden is often a tool for students to connect to heritage, learn hands-on, and where English-language barriers fall away.
My Project
My students need hands-on, interactive, and fun ways to learn about butterflies and other pollinators, in accordance with the national Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). In particular, kindergarteners learn about insect structures, 1st graders learn about habitats, 2nd graders learn about life cycles, and 3rd graders learn about pollinators and their adaptations. Similarly, 4th grade standards include biodiversity, interdependent relationships and ecosystems, which can be applied to butterfly habitats. As many students are English-Language learners, and some have learning disabilities, the garden makes learning more accessible for all students to excel and flourish.
When students make seed balls and plant them in the garden, they will help create a butterfly habitat and healthier ecosystem for their ensured, sustained survival in San Francisco.
Further, when students observe their caterpillars grow into adult butterflies, and then release them, learning is engaging, memorable, and exciting. Finally, students foster an increased sense of stewardship for their school garden as a vital butterfly habitat.
We would greatly appreciate any donation to this exciting project that will benefit all students at Alamo for generations to come!
