Help! We are one bus short for our trip to the San Francisco Zoo. I teach a combination class of wonderful first and second grade ELD (English Language Development) students. The 20 students in my class come from eight different countries and speak nine different languages. They are all making great strides in learning their grade level material in English. Throughout the year we take several local field trips to enrich the learning process for the students. In June we want to end the school year with a big trip to the San Francisco Zoo! The trip is important for many reasons. It reinforces the science curriculum (Living Things), provides experiences for written and oral language development, builds independence and self confidence in the students as they travel away from the school campus, and is a fun way to learn! While I teach in a district that serves mostly middle and upper class students, the school where I teach has many students from a lower-income level. Half of the students in my class qualify for Title I services including free lunch. We have the money for admission, and the buses for other classes going to the zoo have already been paid for by parent contributions. Most of my students' parents simply don't have the money to help us this time. We are requesting funds for an additional bus, which would be shared with 2 other classes. My students are really excited about the possibility of going to the zoo. I have taken my classes to the zoo every year for 18 years. I don't want this class to miss out on such a rewarding experience. Your help will be appreciated and enjoyed by me and the terrific kids in my class! Thank you!
