A Bug's Life

My students need a butterfly growing kit and aquariums to watch the life cycle of the butterfly and ladybug. The books are to help us research information.

My Students

There are misconceptions about schools that are in a "well sought out district"; however, one of the most common is that we have unlimited supplies and funds. The truth is that we get less funding from the state, so our students have fewer materials/supplies. I am constantly trying to find ways to get my kids enough leveled books (so many different reading abilities) and hands-on manipulatives for them to have access to in our class. So many items are just not in our school budget, but I refuse to let that stop us!

My Project

In order to meet our objectives, I want my students to have the opportunity to classify things as living or nonliving, and analyze and record how ecosystems interact and animals adapt to their environment. In doing so, they will gather evidence of how animals use plants for shelter and of how energy is transferred through food chains. As they observe different life cycles, my kiddos will record their findings about animal life cycles, and identify and compare plant parts, recognizing and comparing how offspring resemble their parent.

I will lead them into the learning and understanding of these concepts by providing opportunities for hands on experiences and investigations.

Some misconceptions can occur when students are learning about the energy transfer in the food chain. They need to understand how living organism rely on others for food. My instructional activities will include observing the animal’s structure, how it moves, what it eats, and put in the context of where it lives. I am excited to offer this opportunity for students to see the whole picture of the animal in its (aquarium/kit) environment to make the connection that these factors help contribute to its survival.
