My Students
I teach social skills to a population of students from a lower socioeconomic, urban school district. Our students are faced with many challenges. Some have the bare necessities and poverty is prevalent in the community. Some children lack appropriate clothing, school supplies or adequate nutritious food. Our school district does not have the resources to provide everything that I need to work with the students that I teach. I utilize my own money to sometimes buy clothing for a student or students in need. I also buy my own therapeutic books and supplies. This becomes quite costly. A co-worker told me about DonorsChoose.org and I decided to enroll.
My Project
I'm working with a busy group of second graders who would benefit from a time to refocus in order to be ready to learn. Taking time to utilize fidgets and brain break items can provide students with the ability to calm down and refocus their attention. Having a special corner where they can go to in order to relax their minds and bodies would enable students to return to their seats ready to focus and learn.
I would like to create a Brain Break corner that students can request to enter when feeling overwhelmed or simply need a brain rest.
Students who feel anxious or restless are not able to focus and learn.
