I need supplies for professional development for our beginning teachers, such as document cameras for modeling, flipchart paper, markers, scissors, and colored pencils.
My middle school is in a diverse, high-poverty, urban area in Durham, NC. We have an economically, racially, linguistically, and culturally-diverse group of middle school students. We are a Title I school and 80% of our students participate in free and reduced lunch. Twenty-four of our staff members are beginning teachers, with 0-3 years of experience. It can be difficult to retain teachers in high-poverty schools. We really want to focus on retaining beginning teachers by making sure they feel supported with professional development and supplies.
I hope to provide opportunities and support for our 24 beginning teachers so they can grow their practice and be inspired to stay in the teaching profession.
My Project
I will be leading a "BT Program" for my school this year. I am hosting monthly professional development sessions for teachers that have less than 3 years of experience.
I want to provide opportunities for new teachers to gain the skills, knowledge, and materials they need to be successful through a beginning teacher professional development program.
In these sessions, our beginning teachers will receive training from our school's instructional coaches, teacher leaders, and guest speakers. We want them to discover high quality teaching resources, and have opportunities to discuss their own classroom experiences. I also want to be able to share what I learn as I continue in my own professional growth this year as an instructional coach. This is why I'm requesting the document cameras, markers, scissors, and other materials.
