Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a Title one school and are predominately Hispanic. Many are English Language Learners. My students are incoming 9th graders. They are below level readers. Raising Lexile scores by interventions, and small class sizes makes it challenging but achievable. They are in a reading support class and the goal is to increase their reading level. More importantly I want to encourage them to read, and help them learn to enjoy reading.
I teach in one of the most difficult areas, working with students who are all well below grade level in reading.
My Project
All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. I have watched them the past couple weeks of school read titles just like these, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. We were lacking sports books, and current titles. I also want to replace commonly read books that are slowly falling apart. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
