Help me give my students the gift of a book during this season of giving. For most, if not all of my students, this will be the first book that they own.

My Students

I have the privilege of teaching Reading Fundamentals and Literacy Support to students that have been identified with learning disabilities and/or they are part of our English Language Learners population.

Not only my school, but my classroom has a diverse population.

Many of my students are the first generation to attend school in America. Some are the first in their family to attend middle school. Some of my students live in a group home. I have students that do not have a home. Their family vehicle serves as their home. Our school includes a large population of low income families. More than 80% of my students participate in the free or reduced price lunch program. More than half of my students read at a Kindergarten to 2nd grade level. None of them read at grade level. When I talk with my students about reading at home, most relate that they don't have any books at home. I want to give them the gift of a book during this season of giving. For many of them, this will be the first book that they actually own. I want them to have a book of their own to read and re-read.

My Project

My students come from difficult circumstances. They do not enjoy many of the comforts that most of us do. School is a refuge for them. I want to give my students a love for reading. Being able to read is a life skill that they need. I want to give them books that are appropriate to their reading level that they can build their reading skills at home.

Help me give my students the gift of a book of their very own during this season of giving.

For many this book will be the fist book that belongs to them. They don't have to return it to me. They don't have to share it with their sibling. It is their very own book to keep.
