Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are the 3rd graders at East Oakland PRIDE Elementary School, and we are not just here to learn. We are here to question, create, solve, and inspire.
We strive for excellence.
We also understand that no matter how excellent we already are, there is always room for growth. Our classroom is a safe space where we foster a love of learning.
We live in East Oakland, but we come from all over the world! We know that public schools do not have enough money, but we do not let that stand in our way. We are empowered, so we find other more creative ways to get what we need. This DonorsChoose.org page is one of those ways.
My Project
Our class library is our pride and joy. We have over 3,000 fiction and nonfiction titles, and we love getting to discover amazing new reading worlds each day. Every year, I have students tell me, "I wanted to be in this class, because I love your library." Reading is so central to the work we do, and I take so much pride in the space we have built together over the years.
The books in our classroom library are getting lonely.
It has been months since they got to spend time with the students who love them. Books are meant to be loved and read. They should never sit unused.
This project will help me create a safe way for students to get real books from our class library. It will also set them up to successfully read those books at home. The locking drop box and plastic book bags will give students a safe way to return books they have finished and pick up new books. The notebooks and timers will allow them to manage their independent reading time at home, and the batteries will make the timers usable.
Distance learning requires so much screen time. I would love to be able to put real books in the hands of students. Please help us create a safe system to do just that.
