We teach a great book at our school: "Long Way Down" by Jason Reynolds, an African American young adult author who is as talented as he is prolific! The book is short (a big win for the kids!) but poignant and imminently relatable. Our students love it! In fact, they love it so much that it's flown off the shelves... we only have 13 copies left! Clearly, that's not enough for classes with up to 28 students.
The students love this book, and I want to use it in our second semester, but we need more copies!
This project will ensure that we have a copy for each student and one for both the teacher and the co-teacher.
We're a Title I, inner-city school with a population that doesn't always have access to books at home. For so many, reading hasn't been a priority, so having a book that really speaks to and engages them is critical for changing their mind about reading. Being able to read, discuss, and write about this book in 9th grade will set the kids up to understand that reading can be fun, that they can learn more about the world and about themselves, and that some authors really DO speak directly to them, their neighborhoods, their daily challenges. It's not an exaggeration to say that it could make a difference in how they approach all four years of high school English.
On behalf of my students and colleagues, thank you for considering this request.
