This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the most optimistic, hard-working, and loving K-2 students. They come from a low-income community in South-East San Diego. I say low-income and not impoverished because these children come from families of hope. They may not have the financial benefits of families in other neighborhoods, but the parents make sure their children come to school with a positive attitude and are ready for learning.
Our school population is 82.5% Hispanic, 10.5 % African American, and 3.5% white, 1.6% Asian, American Indian .5%, and .7% two or more races.
Ninety-six perent of the students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, 51% of our students are English Learners, 16% are students with disabilities, and 15% are homeless.
My Project
We are an inner-city school without the resources to purchase independent reading books. Students will choose and self-checkout books from our online library to read at school home. We have a library, but the librarian only comes once a week. With your resources, students will be able to check out and read books any day.
Our reading scores are well below scores of similar schools in more affluent neighborhoods.
We are proposing to tighten the gap with this program.
