Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school I work in is built on the six pillars of character and emphasizes the importance of building community. Each of my students brings a unique perspective into the classroom based on their cultural backgrounds. They all want to see themselves and their peers succeed. I am excited to be part of this community.

If I had to describe my students in three words, they would be compassionate, resilient, and perseverant.

Starting in August, I will be working with this incredible group of fourth-grade students. I met them earlier this year in January when I began working at the school. These students were always supportive of each other and eager to learn. Even in the face of the most challenging semester, where they were removed from the school environment and forced to adapt to a whole new way of learning.

My Project

I recently asked my students if they read at home. The answer I got was a chorus of NOs. At first, as any teacher would, I sighed in disappointment. Then, I had a lightbulb moment. I asked my students how many of them had books at home or went to the library with their families to check out books. There were a couple of hands that went up, but the majority have no access to books at home.

I want to give each student a book to take how and enjoy over the summer.

This will give each student the opportunity to start their own library at home. I have found that it only takes one book for the student to develop a love of reading. If I am able to give each 4th grader one book, this could spark something greater in each of them.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
