My middle school students are witty, brave, persistent, and wise. They amaze me each and every day. My students take on incredible roles in the classroom, at home, and in our community. I am constantly amazed by their creativity, maturity, and overall willingness to do good. I want them to feel empowered, valued, and represented in my classroom. I want them to leave my class with not only new music skills, but also a social conscious and coping mechanisms to support their emotional wellbeing.
My role in the classroom is to support, encourage, and facilitate to allow my students to have agency in our classroom and beyond.
My Project
Teachers need to value and affirm all of the personal idenitities in their classes. In order to do this, teachers need to listen with an ear towards understanding and not towards responding. As teachers, we are often trained to lead a classroom, and for some, that amounts to running the class with little to no input from students.
If our classrooms are to be truly student-centered, then we must empower all voices and affirm all identities.
The requested texts will help me to gain a better awareness and understanding of the needs of others. While reading books will not allow me to truly walk in the shoes of another, they will help me to gain a better understanding of those different than me. These books also give practical ways to introduce social justice issues, fix common mistakes, and heighten my awareness so I can be a better teacher for my students.
