I teach Kindergarten in an elementary school. Our children come to us from a largely rural and economically disadvantaged area. Because many of our students come from low-income homes, often we find that they do not have as many opportunities to interact with text and print. Therefore many of our children have a difficult time when we start learning letters, sounds, and how to read. Often it is these learners who do not respond to traditional methods of instruction. Sometimes we need to find alternative ways to teach these goals. I have learned that if I can put something in their hands that they can interact with, they are more receptive to the learning and are more successful. Some children learn with their eyes, some with their ears, and some with their hands. These children that learn with their hands are the ones that are the most difficult to reach. There are many tools that I could use to help teach these children. Magnetic learning letters are neat because the child does not have to use pencil and paper to practice writing their letters. They use a magnetic pen to move a ball around a track that it in the shape of the letter. This not only enables the child the opportunity to practice letter formation, but also allows them to exercise fine motor skills. I would like a set of Giant Learning Letters. They are large letters made like a pillow. They are brightly colored and appealing to the eye. They come with a set of pictures that the student can attach to the matching letter. Finally, the children in my class have a favorite alphabet story called Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. They love the story and music that goes with it. I would like to extend the book and put it in their hands with a Learning Tree and Letter Set. The set allows the children the opportunity to retell the story and learn letters at the same time. All 21 of the children in my class would have access to the tools that I am requesting. The items would be located in our literacy center. The children who need the hands on learning, would be using the items in a small group setting in addition to the center time. Having these hands on tools would be a great benefit to the students in our classroom.
