A Bare Library...Always Needs Newberrys

My students need 6 copies each of 5 award-winning books, including "My Side of the Mountain" and "Holes", and audiobooks and teachers guides for a variety of other titles.

I teach at a Title I school, where most of my students live in poverty, with very little access to literature. I bought a set of Jonny Tremain books and they ate it up. I was amazed. Johnny Tremain was a Newberry winner in 1944. Most of the books my kids were exposed to were "Captain Underpants" and "Pokemon". My low readers wanted to also read this book, so I read it to them. It was amazing the connections they had with this book. I am a first year teacher and I have very few resources. My library is bare. A collection of Newberry classics would make a world of difference to my students. They are starting to open up to reading. If I had some books that they could sink their teeth into, I know they would devour them. With your help, my students will be able to see beyond the horizons they have now. Their world is very limited and they have very few opportunities. I know if I could get them to read classics, and develop their imaginations, they will begin to dream and make up their own reality. Please help them achieve the world of reading.
