A Balancing Act

My students with hyperactivity disorders need exercise balls and exercise bands to provide activity to them while seated at their desks.

My fifth graders here in my inner-city classroom have many academic challenges which we try to help them overcome. However, a significant number of students in my class came to me with a diagnosis of ADHD and no aides to help them rein it all in during class.

Sometimes it seems as though I am telling them every five minutes to stop banging, tapping their feet or to sit down. My school district does not provide any in-class therapies for them to use up their excess energy and we only have gym class once a week.

If I had some exercise balls for some students to sit on, that may provide enough movement for them to be able to concentrate on the task at hand. The exercise bands could be tied to the legs of their desks to provide some resistance for jiggling legs or tapping feet and may help solve the problems associated with the need for constant movement.

Each of the students affected have a great potential for succeeding in school if an outlet can be found for their need to move. Perhaps your generosity will make them more apt to pay attention and finally feel they CAN do proficient work. What a joy it will be at testing time to show the powers that be that all my students can achieve!
