My students need literature, art, and science supplies that allow them to further explore the concepts Shadows and Reflections, Woodland Animals and How Things Grow.
My school serves K-5th grade inner city students. Teachers collaborate to effectively plan instruction across the grades. We are focused on incorporating STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) into the curriculum. This exposure will help to create lifelong learners that think about solutions and make connections across the curriculum.
My students are four and five year olds olds that are always excited about making new discoveries about the world around them through hands on activities.
This has been a wonderful year full of hands-on learning in STEAM centers. In the block area they have been busy building structures and have used technology to take photos and document their learning. In addition, students create a plan before building and use beautiful stuff to create settings. In the art studio, they are collaborating, constructing and creating their own pieces of art. In every center they visit math exists in various ways such as counting, creating patterns and identifying the shapes in their pictures or structure. I eagerly look forward to centers and small groups, and seeing my students learn through hands on activities that allow them to challenge their thinking, and collaborate with peers.
My Project
My students need these materials and they will will make a difference in for students because they will provide them with additional nonfiction texts to read during whole group, small groups, also available for students to look at in the class library or have reread. In addition, this project will supply the class with specific science tools such as eye droppers and mirrors as they explore how water reflects to explore reflection. These tools will be a great addition to our science center, and can be used for exploration of other concepts.
These science tools will allow many students the opportunity to experiment with reflection, make discoveries about it, and share their learning with peers.
This learning will occur during centers whole group, and small group time as students use mirrors to build with blocks in the block area, at the discovery table students will explore how objects reflect and at the art studio when they use those mirrors to paint or create their own reflections or creations.
The materials I am requesting will help my students to act like scientists as they think, and ask questions about the world around them. The various books I am requesting on Light and Shadows will be used to supplement lessons and in conjunction to hands on experiments that allow them to make reflections and learn more about light and shadow. In addition, during this unit students are also learning about how light affects animals, and people and students will use Legos to build animals and use the tempera paints to create animals in their habitat. They will use the animal books I am requesting as a reference as they create their own animal book. These supplies will allow learning to come alive for all learners in the classroom.
