I teach eighth grade language arts at an urban middle school in NC. My school is classified as a Focus School because we have a high concentration of students that perform below grade level on the state's End of Grade Test, in reading and mathematics.
Contrary, to public opinion, middle school students CAN and DO read. My students range in age from 11 to 14 years old; by definition, they are in the adolescent stage of their development. Yet, their sophistication in comprehending real world issues, dilemmas, and literature mirroring real life, is extraordinary.
I want to enhance the frequency with which my students interact with books by updating the reading corner and the selections that are available for them. I need texts of various genres that are of interest to them.
A student is more likely to engage a text when he/she has prior knowledge about the topic being addressed. This personal connection with the text can then be used to bridge higher order thinking skills such as reflection, analysis, debate, independent reading, and participation in literature discussion circles. In addition, the daily focus of instruction--be it cause and effect or persuasive writing--will become more meaningful as my students reference their text to scaffold their learning process. These goals are aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and the NC End of Grade Test in Reading.
