9th Grade Physics Crash Course (Part 2)

Help me give my students scissors, pipe cleaners, bamboo skewers, craft sticks and more for a crash course lab in Physics.

My Students

I work with 9th-12th graders at MHS.

We have amazing students who use their diversity and life experiences to their advantage.

The school where I teach is a diverse public high school: 23% of students are African American, 19% Hispanic, 16% Asian, 2% Native American, and 36% Caucasian.

Many of my students struggle with challenges outside of school. Over 70% of our students are below the poverty line. Many of our students are struggling readers and some are below grade level. Some students are in the foster care system or are homeless. Many are recent immigrants learning English as a Second Language.

My Project

Our 9th grade Physics classes are incorporating more Project Based Learning into the classroom. PBL works best when it is guided by the strengths, interests, and needs of students.

The driving question for this project is: How do we protect the things and people we care about from collisions?

The projects are designed to be implemented over a four to six week period. In this project, students identify situations in which individuals need protection from collisions or impact and then propose and build protective solutions. Some examples might include more secure baby strollers or shopping carts, helmets for high-impact sports such as skateboarding, football, or biking, or a shoe design that lowers the impact of running. In the process of the project, students learn concepts of Newtonian physics and apply those concepts to the analysis of the type of collision and the design of their solution. Students confer with subject matter experts (such as industrial designers/fabricators or engineers) at key points throughout the project to inform and gather feedback on their product design.

This is part 2 of the project materials we need. We will use the scissors, pipe cleaners, skewers, craft sticks, and packing tape to create their designs.
