This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My first two years teaching I spent around $500 each year solely on snacks for my students. I am one of the teachers who students come to for snacks, school supplies and menstrual cycle supplies. Although I never refuse food or supplies to ANY student, I make sure to teach my students to be generous and mindful of how much they ask for and take. I gently remind them that these snacks and supplies are here for them and that I go out of my way to make them available. Coming in as a new teacher, providing food and supplies was not something I anticipated paying out of pocket. However, given the lack of institutional funds for snacks and even supplies made it clear that for the time being I needed to step in. Food and school supplies are not accessible to ALL of my students, 80% who are "Free Lunch Eligible." It is absolutely known that without proper nutrition it is hard for a student to focus and learn. Nutrition should come first, then learning. Unfortunately, this is a luxury, not a right, in our country.
As I enter my third year teaching I want to name the food and supply distribution in my classroom.
Our Room Food & Supply Closet. I ask for your donations to make this resource sustainable in my class. As I gain more financial support I would work to extend this Food & Supply Closet to the entire school creating an Eagle Food & Supply Closet. For now, I am asking for non-perishable items to provide my students for the upcoming school year.
