Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At the beginning of the school year I will announce to students that they will need a notebook and a folder for Ethnic Studies. Given my experience attending school and being a teacher in West Contra Costa Unified School District I understand that some families will not have the financial capacity to buy new school supplies for their child or children. For this reason I am requesting funding to provide every student with a notebook and folder, which they will use daily for Ethnic Studies.

I firmly believe that it is unjust that my students and their families have to stress about purchasing school supplies for 6-8 classes or be outed in front of the class for "coming unprepared." Therefore I make it my responsibility each year to find resources to support them.

The notebooks will be used by students to take class notes and write journals. Journals are so important in Ethnic Studies as students will be completing reflections regarding their identity, family and community. For instance, one of the essential questions students will be answering over the course of the year is "Who am I?" Therefore, taking notes on key terminology as well as having a consistent place to journal is fundamental to their success in learning class concepts.

In addition, the folders will be used to ensure students have a place to organize their worksheets for each unit in one place. Beyond Ethnic Studies content, my goal as a teacher is to also teach students organizational skills. Overall, without the notebooks and folders, it will be difficult for students to use their previous class materials as tools to deepen their understanding of learning objectives.
