Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a Title 1 school, my students come from a wide variety of underpriveledged backgrounds, and a multitude of family and home situations. In general, my students are hard-working, hands-on learners who often struggle with language; my students appreciate the visual and textile experiences of science, and I love exposing them to tangible, visual, and experimental nature of science content.

My students are generally mature enough to appreciate the depth and application of science content, but young enough to still get wide-eyed at the Magic behind Scientific explanations of the world around them.

My Project

Students love the magic of looking through a prism and seeing light refract into the different colors of the rainbow. They love seeing the simple every day phenomena, such as the sun's electromagnetic waves, heat transfer, and the different ways that light waves interact, in ways that they can understand and explain. With the spherical "crystal balls" and the variety of triangular equilateral prisms, and circular concave and convex lenses, many students at one time will be able to explore the transmission and refraction of electromagnetic waves in the visible light spectrum.

The utility task and clamp lights and bulbs will be used to create heat and white light for exploring and understanding heat transfer via light waves, and light reflection, refraction, and transmission will offer my students the opportunity to work in small groups and have enough materials to perform hands-on labs with enough materials for all to participate.

Students make models of small houses and experiment with ways to save electricity and make the houses more efficient for temperature regulation, and the lamps represent the heat from the sun.

As a perfect model for how mechanical waves, such as sound waves, travel through a medium, the large-size Slinkies offer the perfect group-level demonstration piece, and the class set of the traditional smaller sized Slinkies make the lab exploration of waves be much more accessible to all!
