Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This all started when my class was studying gravity and inertia. We talked about examples of inertia in sports. I had a portable ping pong and we identified how it related to the subject. I began using ping pong as a reward for finishing work. I ended up buying another set and students have been loving it as a reward option. It was amazing to see how very few students ever played before and now they are getting really good.

Students then began talking about how they wished they could play outside which led to pickleball.

While there is a pickleball court on the other side of our city, there is not one close to where they live. My goal is to provide an option to play the game in gym and out on the basketball courts outside. I have not seen my students this excited about being active in a very long time. This can also encourage students to encourage family members to play.

So many young people today are hooked on video games and cell phones. I would love for them to turn that interest into being active, socialize with others, and burn calories at the same time. I love it when they use vocabulary from the unit: acceleration, force, friction, mass, gravity, and inertia.
