I have around 100 students throughout a school day! We live in a very rural area and have a small community. Our elementary and middle schools share a building. These students are kind, energetic, and full of life and potential. I see barriers though, coming their way with today's ever growing statistics against creative young minds clashing against them. They are held back from much due to funds and life's hardships. These students deserve the best!
They deserve to live 'big city' lives in our rural community.
These kids should experience modern furniture which promotes a positive outlook on the school day, allows flexible options to complete class work, shows them they deserve new things, as well as teaches responsibility to take care of new things.
In small communities, money is spread thin. We are there for each other in every family tragedy, fire, hospital visit, etc. We donate where we can and help often. We cannot keep asking the parents to fund their students' educations; their leather wallets becoming tattered threads. Please help these students to become information genius'. To think of, seek from, and expand on information as a habit and a privilege.
My Project
In such a small rural community the only option my students have in any class they face on a daily basis is to sit in a hard plastic desk. There is zero modern furniture in their classrooms. Students get agitated, tired, and bored having the exact same sitting pattern for six hours+ each school day! We need flexible seating options which will still encourage learning such as stand up seating! If students had three of the Allston Standing Desks from Staples we could eliminate 10-12 traditional desks and allow as many students to stand for learning. Students could not only stand while learning, but stretch out, fidget by moving their legs back and forth at the knee, for example, yet still be engaged in learning and not be distracting to peers! Having fun, sleek seating options such as the Baxton Studio Pascal white chairs to take Accelerated Reader test in and present to the class during Socratic Seminar or poetry readings would be such a reward as well! These chairs would replace our current rolling chairs that make a ton of distracting noise and scuff up the flooring! Please help us stand up for our education!
