My Students
My 5th grade students are the most fun, energetic group of children I have ever met. Every morning when they walk into the classroom they are immediately eager to learn and participate. No matter the differences in socioeconomic status, race, and backgrounds my students all value treating each other with kindness and respect.
My 5th grade students strive to be the best students they can be every, single day.
They also love working collaboratively. Through book clubs in readers workshop, and projects in science and social studies, they are given many opportunities throughout the year to work together. It is truly amazing to see the work they can produce individually, as well as collectively.
I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to teach and build relationships with these eighteen 5th graders for my first year of teaching.
My Project
Collaborative work is extremely important to my 5th graders. They value working together, and are able to learn so much from each other. As an educator I also value group work, and know how much it benefits my students. This being said, rather than having desks in my room we recently switched to tables to make it is easier for my students to work together. However, with tables it makes it very easy for my students to misplace their hard work, and/or lose materials.
It is so disappointing when a student has worked so hard on an assignment and then cannot find it because it got misplaced or thrown out.
My students often get frustrated because they have so many different folders and notebooks all in different places around the classroom. With binders, dividers, and looseleaf, my students will be able to keep all of their important materials in one safe place to alleviate a lot of the anxiousness that comes along with switching from desks to tables. It will also prepare them for keeping their materials organized next year in middle school.
My students will be so thankful and excited if this project gets funded. There will be less tears, anger, and stress over lost items and more time for work and fun!
