5th Graders Read to Learn!

My students need 60-book sets of both "The Secret Garden" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Readers are learners and learners are readers," a fellow teacher always tells me. This is very true, especially in 5th grade. As a 5th grader, I always had a book in my hands. What a great age to learn, explore, and analyze the ways of the world through the eyes of an author.

My school is a melting pot of backgrounds and cultures: Hispanic, African-American, Multi-Racial, and Caucasian students.

We also have an influx of Vietnamese refugee students who are learning English and who are entering a school setting for the first time. We do not turn any student away; we embrace differences and determine effective ways to teach every single student. My students come from a variety of home situations. Some are from an average middle class home with all their needs met, while others are struggling to meet basic needs. Some students are loved and supported, while others are making it on their own in an over-crowded, crime filled neighborhood. My students are defying odds that I have never faced before in my lifetime. They are brave and dedicated. They are taking responsibility for their own education, even when no one else seems to support their success. My students are my heroes and I have a lot to learn about life from each of them.

My Project

Sure, our state provides some support. This support is specific and limited. Our school has a library of chapter book sets, but there are 25 maximum of only a few titles. I teach 2 classes that have 30 students each who are reading chapter books. Right now, we are reading Hatchet with only 30 novels to share among 60 students. We have novel studies in the classroom and then the next group uses the same book. It is impossible for students to take these novels home to continue reading. With a set of 60 novels, students could truly immerse themselves into a novel, both in and out of the classroom. Young learners at the age of 10 absorb information like a sponge. Readers who walk in my 5th grade classroom are at a critical point in their educational life. They will either take hold of their education and read to learn, or they will shut down and negatively affect their future. Let's give them more to read to positively feed their minds!

My students deserve a chance.

No child should be punished or go without because of their parents' financial situation. Placing quality reading material in the hands of a 10 year old can have a life long affect on their education, their world view, and their future. Please take the time to donate and open the world of reading to a child. Trust me, they will thank you.
