I remember having access to various reading materials as a child. Unfortunately, many students in the inner city have outdated books or books that do not hold their interest. It is important for students to find books of interest and books on their reading level.
My students are amazing.
They are 5th graders living in the inner city of Baltimore, MD. They are inquisitive and want to read as much as they can but receive very little exposure to their neighborhood library due to lack of parental support. Our school stands at the center of drug wars and families addicted to drugs. Our students need the chance to find a different outlet other then what they see each day and they have chosen to wrap themselves in the fantasy and mystery of interesting books.
One hundred percent of my students are African-American with various reading levels. Many of our students read below a fifth grade level. The students constantly complain about the lack of interesting books they read and would love to see new material come into their school.
My Project
Every Monday, our students get to share a book they read over the weekend or a book they think would be interesting. They are often amazed that many of their favorite movies were once books. Some of the books our school has are very outdated and the students have little to no desire to read them.
Another issue is finding books on the students' levels. With such diverse readers, it is often hard to get materials to reach all learners. My goal is to have all my students read on grade level by the end of the year or as close to grade level as possible. Our reading center will have more options for all learners and students will be able to identify more reading comprehension skills through books of variety, interest and correlating reading levels.
I can't express how important reading fluency and comprehension is important to all learners.
Reading is in every aspect of life. My students are already in the fifth grade preparing for middle school and so many are at a disadvantage. It is important for my students to stop just getting by and actually find a love for literature. By funding this project, my students will start the journey of finding reading enjoyable and on their reading level. This will definitely improve their reading.
