This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach special education at a Title I elementary school in northwest Baltimore. I am preparing for my 2nd year with the same cohort of students, truly an incredible group of young people. While the past year has been fraught with more challenges than I could have ever dreamt of, I am feeling motivated and excited about finding creative ways to engage my students as we prepare for the upcoming virtual learning period.
My students are some of the most joyful and enthusiastic learners you could imagine.
When the pandemic hit, my students and I were given no warning of what was to come. I walked my class out at the end of the school day on Thursday, March 12th, and had no idea that we would not learn together in the same way for the foreseeable future.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to loop up with my students as they start 5th grade this year. Despite all the changes that this year has brought, I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure my students are ready to start middle school by the end of this year.
My Project
The distance learning period has only exacerbated huge inequities in our education system. My students and I need help to get materials that will help them engage with online learning. This project will provide all 5th-grade students basic supplies to meet their needs during the virtual period.
Teaching virtually has required a new level of creativity to meet my students’ needs.
Virtual learning has been challenging for so many students. In order for students to make progress on their learning goals, they require materials to replicate in-class learning. Providing in-home materials will ensure my students are prepared for the year to come. Having notebooks and pencils will allow for students to take notes and complete assignments during ELA and math instruction. Index cards will allow students to create their own flashcards to practice sight word recognition and math fact fluency. Providing personal whiteboards and markers will allow my students a more interactive way to participate online and for me to view student progress. Having a container will help students to organize their home learning space.
My students need the use of these engagement materials in order to be successful in online learning.
